PKU Hosts the IARU Collaborative Technology Transfer Seminar

From March 7th to March 8th 2013, Peking University hosted the “International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU) Collaborative Technology Transfer Seminar”. Many of IARU member universities actively supported and were involved in the seminar. Experts and top academics from world top institutions such as the University of California at Berkeley, University of Copenhagen, ETH Zurich, National University of Singapore, Australian National University, Peking University and the University of New South Wales all gathered together for the seminar. Professor Dongmin Chen from the School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Peking University, Director Dr. Hongwei Xia from the Department of International Collaboration at Peking University and Professor Changqi Wu from the Guanhua School of Management at Peking University were invited to attend the seminar as well as give a speech on the conduct of Peking University. Vice Chancellor and Provost Enge Wang were invited to give a keynote speech. 

With the continuous development of the economy and along with globalization, technology transfer between universities, patent licensing, and talent development have all become important forces behind world economic development.  The aim of the current seminar was to aid world economic development through the discussion of best practice of international university technology transfer and patent licensing, and the know-how in talent development. 

Professor Dongmin Chen made a keynote address on this issue concerning universities, business and government partnerships. He analyzed the current lack of university technology transfer models, introduced PKU’s potential cooperation with governments and businesses as a new model of technology transfer, and pointed out that China’s international technology transfer and incubation were facing many opportunities and challenges. Many domestic and foreign experts and scholars and technology transfer agency heads thematic reports introduce the topic from different angles, demonstrating and sharing different university intellectual property licensing models of development and experience. Professor Dongmin Chen, director of the General Assembly, who is to establish cooperation between the libraries of intellectual property on behalf of the organisers of the IARU member universities, to cultivate innovative talents and collaborative solutions, has been highly praised by experts. An in-depth discussion on this motion is able to making valuable comments and suggestions.


Professor Chen gave a talk on university-enterprise collaboration and discussed the current model of technology transfer. He pointed the weaknesses and strengths of the current model and proposed a few exciting new modes of collaboration. Using the quantitative and qualitative report from domestic and international universities??, Professor Chen proposed that the IARU member universities should build a collaborative model that can facilitate the transfer of technology and set up an intellectual property database.  His proposal and viewpoints were well received amongst the seminar delegates and guests.

The seminar is the first event organized by PKU since becoming an IARU member.  The event facilitated a closer and more meaningful interaction between PKU and other IARU university members; it was especially a positive experience for technology transfer initiatives across all universities on both national and international levels.


Additional Notes: IARU: International Alliance of Research Universities. The alliance is composed of 10 universities and was founded in 2006.  The 10 universities are: the Australian National University, the National University of Singapore, ETH Zurich, Peking University, and the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Cambridge, the University of Copenhagen, the University of Oxford, the University of Tokyo and Yale University.
