John Byrne Gave a Talk at the Basics of Entrepreneurship Class in the Peking University

Nobel Peace Prize Winner John Byrne was invited to give a lecture seminar at the Basics of Entrepreneurship classes in Peking University on November 4th 2012 by Professor Chen, Dean of the School of Entrepreneurship and Innovation.  The topic was of the lecture was “Energy Strategy for Urban Sustainable Development.

The seminar is co-organized by the School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Office of Science and Technological Development Peking University.  Professor Shiqing Xie was the Master of Ceremony for the seminar event, Professor Dongmin Chen, Dean of the School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Teaching fellow at the Economics Department and Strategic Research Institute, Dr. Lingyan Suo attended the seminar.  In addition, representatives from Haidian Management Committee, Engineering Faculty, Innovation Support Organization, CITIC Group, and other social groups all attended the seminar.
Byrne talked about the relationship between Carbon Dioxide and global warming, and the important consequences of the rise in the global average temperature.  He analyzed the data and reports assembled by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for the audiences, and provided insightful analysis on the effective measure to mitigate the negative effects of global warming.

One of the most effective methods is to reduce the Carbon emission to the atmosphere.  However, there are many existing human forces preventing the goal of carbon emission.  As Byrne pointed out, these anti-forces include decentralized governing power, limited alternative investment options, and the lack of credibility of environmental consulting firms.  In order to address these problems, Byrne suggested that Social Entrepreneurship Union (SEU) is an affective and plausible approach.  He also introduced a few Clean Credit Programs to the students as examples of SEU.

After the seminar, Professor Byrne joined Gang Zhao, Research Associate at China Science Technology Strategic Research Institute Researcher, Deputy Director Xiuying Zhang at Zhongguancun Haidian District Management Committee, Professor Dongmin Chen, Professor Shiqing Xie, and Song Jie, special guest at Engineering Faculty for a roundtable and continued discussion on sustainable development.
